Here’s What Everyone Gets Wrong About Lifting Weights When You’re Older

There’s still a huge misconception that getting older means you should automatically start doing less.

Less weight. Less challenging exercise. Less strength training.

But actually, staying strong becomes increasingly important as we get older — and my client John is a pretty brilliant example of why 💪

Meet John — he’s 83!

John came to me after his daughter reached out following a couple of health issues. The aim wasn’t to turn him into a powerlifter or have him throwing enormous weights around the gym. 😂

We simply wanted to work on his strength, balance and confidence through sensible, progressive strength training tailored specifically to him.

And he’s doing amazingly.

John regularly tells me how much stronger his legs feel compared with when he first started. He feels steadier and more balanced, and he’s also told me that the “fuzzy head” feeling he sometimes experienced feels much clearer.

That last one is John’s personal experience rather than something I’d ever promise strength training can magically fix — but hearing how much better he feels in himself is one of my favourite parts of training him.

Strength training isn't just about muscles

When people think about lifting weights, they often picture younger people training to build muscle, change their body shape or hit personal bests.

But strength training can mean so much more than that.

As we get older, maintaining our strength can help us continue doing the everyday things we often take for granted.

Getting out of a chair. Walking confidently. Climbing the stairs. Carrying shopping. Recovering our balance if we stumble. Getting up from the floor. Continuing with hobbies. Staying independent.

The reason for wanting to be strong might change as we get older, but the importance of strength certainly doesn't.

At 30, your motivation might be growing your glutes.

At 83, it might be getting out of an armchair without needing three attempts and a motivational speech first. 😂

Both are perfectly good reasons to strength train.

You don't suddenly become 'too old' to exercise

One of the things I really want to challenge is the idea that older people are automatically too fragile for resistance training.

Training should always be appropriate for the individual — taking into account their experience, ability, health and any medical advice they've been given — but age itself isn't a reason to stop challenging your body.

We naturally lose muscle mass and strength as we age, which makes maintaining and building strength even more valuable.

And you don't need to be lifting enormous weights to benefit.

For someone like John, we're interested in progress.

A movement becoming easier. Feeling stronger through his legs. Being more stable. Gradually increasing what he can do. Feeling more confident in his own body.

Those wins might not look dramatic on Instagram, but in real life, they're huge.

Why this means so much to me ❤️

I genuinely love training people of all ages, from teenagers right through to clients in their 70s and 80s.

But working with older adults will always have a particularly special place in my heart.

Before becoming a Personal Trainer, I worked as a carer. I saw first-hand just how important things like strength, mobility and independence can become later in life.

So when John tells me his legs feel stronger or I see something becoming easier for him than it was when he started, it means a lot.

He's 83 years old and getting stronger.

And I think that's a pretty brilliant reminder that fitness doesn't have an expiry date.

You don't have to train like you're 20.

You don't have to be the strongest person in the gym.

You just need to work on being strong enough for your life.

Because you're never too old to benefit from being stronger ❤️

We start where you are and build from there 💪
