Personal Training Is About So Much More Than Weight Loss: Jackie's Strength Journey 💪❤️

What if the biggest result from personal training wasn't something you could see in the mirror?
When people think about personal training, they often think about losing weight, dropping dress sizes or changing how their body looks.
And whilst there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting those things, I think we're missing a HUGE part of what exercise is really about.
Because sometimes the most incredible results have absolutely nothing to do with your appearance.
Sometimes they're about being able to go on a spontaneous hike, spend an entire day on your feet without feeling exhausted, or simply having the confidence that your body is strong enough to cope with whatever life throws at it.
And my client Jackie is the perfect example of this ❤️
Meet Jackie: Four Years of Getting Stronger
Jackie has been coming to Euphoria Fitness since February 2022, training with me twice a week.
We've kept things relatively simple and consistent:
One upper-body strength session per week
One lower-body strength session per week
When Jackie first started, her goals weren't about losing weight or achieving a particular body shape.
She wanted to become stronger, improve her flexibility and mobility, and support her body through menopause, hopefully helping to reduce some of the symptoms she was experiencing.
And nearly four years later, the progress she's made is absolutely incredible.
Not because she's followed some revolutionary training programme or spent hours in the gym every day.
But because she's consistently shown up, worked hard and gradually become stronger.
Funny how that works, isn't it? 😉
Let's Talk About Those Strength Gains 💪
One of my favourite things about working with clients long-term is looking back at where they started and realising just how far they've come.
Jackie's progress is a brilliant example.
She's now performing assisted pull-ups, something that requires a fantastic combination of upper-body and core strength.
She's hip thrusting THREE TIMES the weight she was lifting when we first started.
We're incorporating increasingly complex movements into her sessions, including exercises performed from a deficit, which require greater control, stability and strength through a larger range of movement.
Her core strength has improved massively, as has her overall confidence when tackling more challenging exercises.
And the best bit?
We haven't had to completely change her programme every few weeks to keep seeing progress.
We've focused on progressive overload, good technique, consistency and making sure her training continues to challenge her appropriately.
Because getting stronger doesn't have to be complicated.
It just requires patience, consistency and a willingness to keep pushing yourself.
The Results That Matter Most Aren't Always Visible 🥾
Now, don't get me wrong. I absolutely LOVE seeing Jackie lift heavier weights and perform exercises that would have seemed impossible when she first started.
But do you know what I love even more?
Hearing about how much easier everyday life has become.
Jackie can now spontaneously decide to go on a hike without worrying whether she's fit enough.
She can spend an entire day on her feet at work without being concerned about how exhausted or uncomfortable she's going to feel afterwards.
And perhaps most importantly, she can wake up the following morning feeling absolutely fine.
These might sound like small things, but they're really not.
This is what strength training should be giving us: more freedom to enjoy our lives.
It's about being able to say yes to opportunities without questioning whether your body can cope.
It's about having the strength, stamina and confidence to do the things you enjoy.
And it's about making everyday activities feel easier, rather than something you have to recover from.
You can't necessarily demonstrate those improvements with a before-and-after photograph.
But that doesn't make them any less significant.
In fact, I'd argue they're some of the most valuable results you can achieve.
Strength Training and Menopause: Why It Matters 🌸
One of Jackie's original goals was to support her body through menopause, and this is something I think deserves much more attention when we talk about women's fitness.
During perimenopause and menopause, declining oestrogen levels can contribute to changes in muscle mass, bone density, fat distribution and recovery.
Many women also experience changes in sleep, energy levels, mood and general wellbeing.
Whilst strength training isn't a magic cure for menopause symptoms, it can play an incredibly important role in supporting long-term health.
Regular resistance training can help to:
Maintain and build muscle mass: Helping counteract the gradual loss of muscle that can occur as we age.
Support bone density: Weight-bearing and resistance exercises provide the stimulus our bones need to maintain strength.
Improve balance and stability: Helping reduce the risk of falls and making everyday movements feel more controlled.
Improve physical function: Making activities such as climbing stairs, carrying shopping and walking longer distances easier.
Support mental wellbeing: Exercise can have positive effects on mood, confidence and overall quality of life.
And here's something I wish more women understood:
Getting older doesn't mean you have to accept becoming progressively weaker.
Our bodies will inevitably change with age, but we can do an enormous amount to maintain and improve our physical capabilities.
Jackie is living proof that investing in your strength is one of the best things you can do for your future self.
We Haven't Focused on Weight Loss. And That's the Point 👀
Something else I really want to highlight about Jackie's journey is that weight loss has never been our primary focus.
We haven't spent four years chasing a smaller number on the scales.
We haven't measured her success by how many inches she's lost.
And we certainly haven't made her appearance the deciding factor in whether her training is working.
Instead, we've focused on what her body can actually DO.
And interestingly, as Jackie's strength has improved and she's developed more muscle, her body shape has changed too.
This is something people often overlook when it comes to resistance training.
Building muscle can change your body composition, improve muscle definition and alter your shape, even without significant weight loss.
But here's the really important part.
Even if Jackie's body shape hadn't changed at all, her progress would still be just as impressive.
She would still be lifting three times her original hip thrust weight.
She would still be performing assisted pull-ups.
She would still be stronger, more capable and more confident.
She would still be enjoying hikes and long days on her feet without worrying about her fitness.
And every single one of those things would still deserve celebrating.
Because your body doesn't have to become smaller for your training to be successful.
Personal Training Should Improve Your Life, Not Just Your Reflection ❤️
As a personal trainer, I genuinely believe we've become far too focused on the aesthetic side of fitness.
Social media is full of transformation photos, weight loss stories and promises to help people achieve their dream body.
And whilst physical changes can absolutely be a positive part of someone's fitness journey, they shouldn't be the only thing we celebrate.
What about the person who can now get up from the floor without struggling?
The person who can carry their grandchildren?
The person who no longer worries about going on a long walk with friends?
The person who feels more stable, more independent and more confident in their own body?
Or the person who can simply get through a busy working day without feeling physically exhausted?
Those are transformations too.
And in my opinion, they're some of the most meaningful ones.
Personal training should be about helping you build a body that supports the life you want to live.
Whether you're 25, 45, 65 or 85, there is value in becoming stronger.
Not because you need to look a certain way.
But because being physically capable makes life easier, gives you more options and helps you maintain your independence for longer.
Four Years of Consistency. A Lifetime of Benefits.
Jackie's journey is exactly why I love being a personal trainer.
Watching someone become stronger in the gym is brilliant.
But watching that strength translate into their everyday life? That's what makes my job so rewarding.
Four years of twice-weekly training has given Jackie far more than heavier lifts.
It's given her greater confidence in her physical abilities, improved strength and the freedom to enjoy activities without worrying about whether her fitness will hold her back.
And we're certainly not finished yet!
So, if you're considering personal training but feel like you don't have a weight loss goal, or you're worried you need to want to change your appearance to justify getting started, please know that you absolutely don't.
Wanting to be stronger is enough.
Wanting to move better is enough.
Wanting to feel more capable as you get older is enough.
You don't need to hate how your body looks to want to improve what it can do.
And if there's one thing I hope Jackie's story demonstrates, it's this:
Progress isn't always measured in kilograms lost. Sometimes it's measured in kilograms lifted, mountains climbed and all the things you no longer have to think twice about doing 💪❤️
